A very sad event …

I guess my family and I have been going thru a really bad patch of STUFF.

Our family is grieving.

My Mom and Dad’s two beautiful 3-4 year old German Shepherds were run over and killed.  Another dog, a terrier mix, has a broken leg, which was operated on yesterday.

It happened right in front of my folks, in their 1/4 mile driveway.

My ex-brother-in-law was the one who hit them.

I mean, how weird!  He was not going fast, as my parents’ farm has a gravel driveway.  One second the big dogs were in his rearview mirror, the next second he ran them both over (tire ran right over their chests).  Rosa died in the driveway, and Reika died en route to the vet.  Watson did well in surgery yesterday, but won’t eat or stand yet.  We’re hoping it’s just too soon for him after surgery.

Our entire family rallied around Mom and Dad and shared in their grief and sorrow.  It was a beautiful thing to witness —- how much my folks are loved.

    1. Thanks Sam. This may be the turning point for my folks – they may just move to town sooner than they expected. Without large dogs to protect the farm, and with their ages (81 & 78), it wouldn’t be right to start over with a new dog. Thanks for your kind words.

  1. So sad to read. I wish your family peace. 🙏
My Oreo came to us with the habit of biting tires, only while they are rolling, tho… Odd. We found out only after he got bumped up a bit trying to bite a moving, motorcycle tire.

    1. yes, Watson absolutely HATES anything with tires. I’m truly surprised that I’d not hit him myself at some point. Thanks so much for your kind words.

  2. Oh, that hurt my heart to read. I lost a childhood pet the same way. A cousin ran over her, and she was so upset. It also worries me, because it could happen to me. My dogs run after cars in the rural driveway, and you can’t see them when they are directly in front of you. This sends shivers down my spine. Please know that I’m thinking of you, your parents, and the poor guy who ran them over.

    1. Thank you so much for your care and understanding. The worst part is that the man that ran them over is my sister’s ex-husband, who owns a farm behind my folks and who farms my folks’ ground for them. My ex BIL is really tore up about it — not necessarily for the dogs themselves, but for my parents.

  3. I’m so sorry! How heartbreaking for everyone, especially your mom and dad. I know my Lexie is my heart, and even thinking about losing her brings tears to my eyes. Saying prayers for comfort for all of you. I can’t imagine how the driver feels…

    1. Thanks Dave. I had a bad experience with someone after posting about my parents living fearfully (yes I was shamed, called a c**t – vile name I can’t say- on my own blog!!) and just haven’t felt much like sharing. Thanks so much for your support and kindness. I’ll be back!

  4. So Sorry! I have two Shepherds. One looks like Rosa and a black female coming up on a year old. My neighbor rescued them this morning and corralled them back into the fenced area because someone had opened the gate and let them out. One was sitting in the road of our subdivision drive. I have lost pets to old age and I am just so hurt for you and your family because these dogs look so much like mine and I know how much we love them.
