Cities of Gold: A Journey Across the American Southwest by Douglas Preston
It’s big on Mexican/Native/American history from the 1500’s through present day, as well as Doug Preston’s journey on horseback from Mexico to New Mexico, following a general route that Coronado took.

What was your first adult job?
The first job I had after babysitting was at Sherman Hospital in Elgin, IL as a “messenger” …. I worked out of the Admitting Department and in addition to taking patients up to their rooms via wheelchair, I did rounds of the hospital picking up and delivering reports, lab specimens (gross), X-rays, etc. I started at age 16 and finally quit at age 20 or 21.
What’s your favorite breakfast cereal?
I don’t eat breakfast, especially not any type of grain (I eat a Ketogenic diet — no grains). In my “past” life, I loved Capt’n Crunch, Lucky Charms, all the kid cereals, for the most part, but also Raisin Bran, Cheerios, and hot oatmeal and Cream of Wheat (farina).
What did you appreciate or what made you smile this past week?
I stamped my National Parks Passport for the first time this year and am so very grateful that Teddy Roosevelt led the country in creating National Parks. Thank God for these beautiful National treasures.
Yeah for President Roosevelt. I love our National parks.

We’re big on National Parks where I live too. They are the best thing ever, except for my dinner 🙂
