Photo(s) of the Day

I saw on FB a memory from a year ago that broke my heart.  It was one year ago that I brought home a little 5 month old kitten, FIV+, who was given to me free from a shelter that usually euthanizes FIV+ cats.  This tiny girl, who I gave a big name (Olivia DeHaviland Menz), changed my life and, most importantly, that of my tuxedo cat Georgie.  I had adopted Georgie, my first FIV+ cat, almost 3 years ago on the day he was to be euthanized.  He’d been at the shelter a long time without any looks.  He was also thought to hate other animals, so I was really reluctant to bring another cat home unless it was a small young female.

I kept Olivia in the spare bedroom for several weeks and, finally, she and Georgie made peace.  Georgie actually PLAYED!  They would run back and forth, rough and tumble, then crash for a while.  Georgie even took to holding Olivia down with his much larger paw to groom her.

I still don’t know what happened to make her go downhill SO fast.  Maybe because of her FIV+ status, as that’s the only thing I can think of.  She had antibiotics, a blood transfusion, and, finally, I had to put down a 7 month old kitten.  It’s bad enough when you have to put down an old pet, but a baby?  Too much.

But without that tiny kitten, Georgie would never have come out of his shell to accept other cats into “his” home.  God brought her to us for a reason.  Those tiny paws have left an imprint on my heart to this day.  RIP my baby Olivia.  Georgie misses you.
